Description |
Wire rack holding three blue glass diamond design sided bottles; 2 large and 1 small. The 2 larger ones contain a liquid and solid fragments - all three have clay or ceramic stoppers in various stages of deterioration. Bottles are flat on four sides. From the 1870s through the early 1900s, when a small fire broke out in the interior of the home, a glass orb, known as a fire grenade, was taken from a wall mounted bracket, and thrown at the base of the flames. The grenades were filled, in some cases, with salt water (because it would not freeze in the winter), or carbon tetrachloride and sealed with a cork and cement. |
